heard it. the belief of the nra is the second amendment has to give american citizens the fire power to fight back against you. so how do you conduct your business in enforcing the law in not knowing what is behind that door? >> i find it to be scary, creepy, and simply just not based on logic. >> jennifer: it's based on fantasy and fear mongering but that never stopped the opposition before, and it is not going to now. they keep pushing the nra argument that citizens need to be completely armed to protect themselves against the tyrannical government, and not just to protect themselves from police, but also in case the police can't be there to protect them. and why wouldn't the police be there? maybe because of the budget cuts, the same budget cuts that have been pushed for before republicans across the country. here is south carolina republican senator, lindsey graham on this subject. >> the reason i'm going to oppose the legislation, chief johnson, is because i respect what you do as a law enforcement officer. has your budget been cut? >> yes. >> do you think

from the executive branch. of course when you're dealing with the nra this is somewhat expected. republicans have made no secrets that they intend to make the confirmation of chuck hagel very difficult. and jack lou who was nominated for treasury secretary will have a much easier go of it than hagel. well the conventional wisdom may be wrong. alabama senator jeff sessions, who is the ranking minority member of the senate budget committee had this to say about jack lou. >> i tend to oppose this nomination. he doesn't bring the former new york fed chairman like secretary geithner and other very prominent people that we've had as secretary of treasury the premier financial position in the united states government more important because our president has no training, and really no understanding of class classical business and economics. >> jennifer: and an unnamed congression nat source told the "washington post" jennifer ruben that lou was the one to screw up any dales deals and proposed lefty positions, whatever that means. and, we don't need a treasury secretary who thinks that w

the violence. >>> as for yesterday's meeting with the nra that, one didn't go so well. yesterday's talks had nothing to do with keeping our children safe and was more about demonizing the second amendment. the nra statement says the group will "not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and mad men." we know gun sales often skyrocket after mass shootings usually because buyers are afraid of the government imposing stricter gun regulations. we are seeing that in the wake of newtown connecticut. one thing we're also seeing is a big showing from anti-gun groups. in just the last month alone more than 400,000 new members have joined mayors against illegal guns, that's a group started by new york city mayor michael bloomberg and nearly one million people have signed the demand a plan petition calling on obama and congress to outline a course of action to end gun violence. more "bill press show" is up live after the break. stay with us. right have, about the "heavy hand of government" ... i want to have that conversation. let's talk about it. really? you're going to

hate to say that, but i've said it before. the nra is in the dna of the g.o.p. they're not going to let it out. they might have a hearing. i don't think they'll let a bill come out. the senate will come out and i don't know if they'll be able to deal with it. they like the nra and the nra likes to sell guns and they like to sell high capacity magazines. i'm not against the nra per se. i'm not against the second amendment. but i am against the high capacity magazines and the assault rifles, and i think the reasonable restrictions we can have in this country to protect the public and background checks loopholes at gun shows needs to be stopped but i don't think the government will let it happen. >> michael: it's december pressing when you see the news, all this gunfire and the republicans will not move because they're in the hands of the nra. it's really pathetic. they are a bunch of clowns sometimes. we are a better country because of people like you. thank you. >> thank you. >> reporter: it's been 39 days since the tragedy at sandy hook. at least 1131 has died from gun violence. that's
